Delray United Action Council has a unique and comprehensive senior center, where seniors age without boundaries. The Delray Senior Center in collaboration with Delray Senior Housing has designed it's programs to reduce isolation and create a high level of health awareness among our seniors. The programs will provide participants with the social stimuli needed to preserve and enjoy their remaining years. It is our belief that social contact will be advantageous in keeping seniors integrated in the community. Studies have shown that activities can keep an individuals mind occupied and help them to maintain a positive self image and enhance the mental capabilities of seniors. Therefore, there is a great advantage to being a participant of a senior center program. Programs are not quite as structured as our adult day care program but the mission remains the same, healthy aging, nutritious meals, fitness programs, disease management, recreation and leisure activities, all provided in a clean, comfortable, safe and professionally operated facility.
For the past 38 years DUAC has provided quality services to the seniors of Delray/Southwest Detroit. DUAC serves 35-45 seniors daily for our food & friendship congregate meal program. During the 2005/06 winter season DUAC provided assistance to 72 seniors with their utility bills through our THAW program. For the 2004-05 fiscal year DUAC provided services to 615 seniors and as of May 2006,401 seniors had been provided assistance ranging from food, utility assistance, transportation, adult day services and counseling.
The services are provided by an executive director who oversees all aspects of the project, including program development and implementation. The deputy director assists the executive director in executing and monitoring the delivery of all services by providers. Our nutrition aides serves meals daily to our seniors through our food & friendship congregate meal program. The nursing staff monitors the blood pressure, glucose, and weight levels of the seniors and maintains all medical documents. The nursing staff will also provide health education and the coordination of outside health services. The activity coordinator facilitates all leisure time activities and will develop crafts that are conducive to stimulation and motivation and promote physical activities such as exercise and dance. The bus driver transports the seniors to and from the senior center and to field trip activities. All services performed are in collaboration with the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), Chass Clinic, Dr. Sherrod (optometrist), and the City of Detroit Senior Citizens Department.
